State board honors Belinda McRae and Stephanie Bell with resolutions, members recall reforms

The Alabama State Board of Education unanimously adopted resolutions Jan. 9 honoring two departing members: Belinda McRae and Stephanie Bell.
Belinda McRae, a board member for State School Board District 7, was recognized with a resolution noting her years of service and contributions. “When I first got elected, I had all these ideas of things I wanted to change in education, but I quickly found out that I needed to work with Gov Governor Ivey, her staff, with Doctor. Mackey, with this board, with the state department, with the legislature, and it wasn't a simple thing to change education in Alabama,” McRae said in remarks to the board.
Stephanie Bell, who the board recognized for three decades of service, reflected on reforms and programs developed or supported during her tenure, including the Alabama Reading Initiative and the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative. “I have truly been, I'm honored, It has been a privilege to serve not only the people in our in District 3,” Bell said, adding that the state’s programs have drawn interest from other states and countries.
State education officials and board members praised both members. Dr. Mackey thanked the departing members and noted the department's work with them over the years. Each resolution was adopted by unanimous voice vote; the transcript records the approvals as unanimous but does not include a numeric roll-call tally.
The board paused for remarks and standing ovations for both members following adoption of the resolutions. The meeting proceeded to other business after the recognitions.
