Sun City West Sports Pavilion to add resident-only bowling hours, remodel pub and pursue equipment upgrades

In a community video for Sun City West, Steven and Gary discussed new resident-only bowling hours, upcoming tournaments and planned facility improvements at the Sports Pavilion.

Gary, Sports Pavilion manager, said, "We are going to do a Saturday night resident only bowling league that's gonna start in September, and we're very excited about it." He said the league will be a 24-team competition and that Lanes 1 through 6 will be reserved for residents and their guests from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. every other Saturday.

The pavilion will host several tournaments this year, Gary said, including a CBE senior tournament in June ("I believe it's the eleventh, or somewhere around that date," he said), the Arizona Bowlorettes event in July, and a city senior open in November.

Gary described a planned temporary closure and remodel of the Lizard Acres pub: "The Lizard Acres right now, my understanding is it will close June, and it will be down somewhere between 8 and 10 weeks. So it looks like late August, early September, it'll be opening back up and they are making a brand new bar." He said the remodel will extend the bar, move the dart boards, return the shuffleboard table to the concourse, add more large-screen televisions and install more air conditioning.

On bowling-equipment upgrades, Gary said the improvements are "pending governing board approval." He described a staged plan that includes new pin setters in spring 2026, oiling machines likely to be purchased after July 1 of this year, new masking units (the artwork above the pin setters), new bumpers and gutters, subway ball tracks and foul lights. He said those mechanical changes would occur in April and May 2026 if approved.

Gary also outlined smaller improvements to the billiards room, including painting in July, new furniture, artwork, and new ceiling fans to "spruce the place up a little bit."

The video did not specify funding sources, the name of the governing board that must approve the equipment purchases, or precise dates and budgets for the projects. Steven, the video's host, encouraged residents to visit the pavilion and join leagues.

Pending the governing board's action and the timeline given in the video, the pavilion's mechanical upgrades are planned for 2026 while the Lizard Acres remodel is expected to complete in late August or early September of the current year.
