Dr. Johnson said the feedback was “generally positive” but that many responses came in the form of questions about implementation and feasibility. He listed recurring themes across groups: more mental-health supports, restroom and basic facilities upkeep, clearer communication of programs to the community, expanded elementary/middle athletics opportunities, stronger career-readiness pathways, staff wellness/retention measures, and cybersecurity and AI-integration planning. He added, “Bathrooms. Bathrooms. Bathrooms.” as an emphasis from multiple constituencies.
The superintendent presented three options for the board: (1) provide direct wording changes to the goals, (2) direct the superintendent to return with targeted revisions, or (3) hold a longer special session to revise the goals. Dr. Johnson outlined a timeline for additional drafts and public outreach, with a second draft due before the board’s next June meeting and a further draft in late June followed by a July approval target.
Board President Glenn and other board members discussed communication formats and marketing, endorsing a layered approach that presents a short, community-facing “headline” (values) with clickable or printable deeper detail for staff and specialists. Board members asked that the district produce public-facing brochures or web materials and that staff receive written answers and follow-up meetings about process questions in the fall.
The board asked Dr. Johnson to prepare a next iteration of the goals incorporating the feedback and to return with revisions before the next board meeting; the meeting record shows the board’s direction to the superintendent rather than a formal vote on the content.
The district will continue stakeholder outreach: Dr. Johnson said an email summarizing tonight’s feedback would be sent to the community inviting additional comments and that staff-level meetings (including with the El Segundo Teachers Association) would be scheduled to answer process questions.
Next steps noted by Dr. Johnson included producing a more concise public presentation of the goals while retaining a detailed internal version for staff implementation planning.
