Elmwood Park students and coaches honored for state track qualifiers and school-year activities

Elmwood Park CUSD 401 on May 20 recognized student athletes who qualified for state track meets, honored staff colleagues of the month and heard reports from student liaisons and building principals.
The district highlighted eight state qualifiers in track and field. "We had eight technically qualify," said Bridal Allman, head coach, who spoke with assistant coaches Mikayla Vacy and Marin Al Renga present. Allman identified the girls 4x800 relay — with sophomore Nicole Gorka, junior Tim Pereira and junior Haley Rivera (anchor) and freshmen alternates Alicia Russick and Olivia Kritska — and freshman Sonia Iverson, a sectional champion in the 300-meter low hurdles, among the qualifiers. Allman said Iverson’s time is about 0.6 seconds off the school record.
"Senior Jordan Boatman has qualified in the long jump for the second year in a row," Allman added, noting Boatman will compete at Eastern Illinois this week.
Student liaisons from Elmwood Elementary, John Mills, Elm Middle School and Elmwood Park High School gave short presentations on end-of-year activities and awards. Henry Smith, identified as Elmwood Elementary’s board reporter for the meeting, thanked families and staff for recent appreciation events and community partnerships, noting visits from Parks and Recreation and a tree-planting poster contest whose winners were honored by the village mayor.
High school reports included Advanced Placement exam dates, senior recognition events and a list of student-athletes who committed to play in college. Michelle Cepeda (speaker identified in the high school segment) noted DECA students competed internationally and that 29 students were inducted into the National Honor Society.
Principals and staff used the time to announce colleague-of-the-month winners, celebrate music and athletic performances, and preview summer programs and graduation logistics, including graduation set for Sunday, June 1 at noon at the stadium.
The district also recognized newly elected board members with certificates of election during the meeting.
The board meeting moved from these presentations into business items after the reports.
