At the May 20 meeting, a local business owner told Oconee County Council that current operations at the county’s construction and demolition (C&D) landfill expose contractor vehicles to debris that has caused punctures and other damage.
Ralph Lantane, owner of Creative Craftsman, said his crew routinely picks up nails and other debris after driving through the landfill access and described an incident in which a truck sustained multiple punctures. He said county rules require trailers longer than 12 feet to drive into the debris field to dump loads, while shorter trailers may dump over the wall; Lantane asked the county to consider allowing longer dump trailers to avoid the debris path or to provide services such as tire plugs or an air compressor to help contractors on site.
County staff and council members responded that the landfill accepts multi‑county waste and that demand forces heavy throughput. A county representative said the landfill is permitted to sell material to a third party and that operations include a magnet sweeper for metal; the county also said improvements to a secondary access road are planned. Staff asked the contractor to call for follow‑up on the tire damages and cautioned that leaving public compressors or tire repair equipment at the site could present safety or liability risks.
Council members agreed to follow up with landfill staff and to consider whether procedure or access improvements are needed; no formal policy or funding decision was made at the meeting.
