Students, teachers showcase district fine arts; board recognizes Seal of Biliteracy recipients

The Davenport board meeting opened a lengthy fine arts recognition segment featuring student performances, presentations by teachers and remarks from participating students across the district's elementary, middle and high school programs.
Presentations included oboe and choir performances, a segment highlighting McKinley Elementary's art program and multiple Creative Arts Academy student displays. Teachers described how arts education supports 21st-century skills, creativity and student identity; one presenter said dance instruction fosters discipline, spatial awareness and communication skills that have translated into career skills.
Several students spoke about what art and music mean to them: a third grader from McKinley described art as calming and said it lets her express ideas she could not always speak. High school students from Central and other schools described volunteer projects, murals, All-State recognitions and the role of art in building friendships and community connections.
The board also recognized 40 seniors who earned the Seal of Biliteracy this year, including students from all three high schools and languages in French and Spanish. Staff noted that 12 of the 40 also earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy and that one senior earned the federal "working seal" making them eligible for some federal employment standards.
Superintendent and board members praised the programs and several first-year teachers were acknowledged for their contributions. The fine arts segment concluded with trustee appreciation for the student performers and teachers.
