Summary
The CAH education committee reported that Nyla Dinkins, the program’s DC winner, performed at Lisner Auditorium and won across levels; commissioners encouraged attendance at upcoming student showcases.
The Commission on the Arts and Humanities’ education committee reported a milestone for the Poetry Out Loud program at the May 19 meeting, highlighting the success of a city student and urging public support for student events.
Zachary Torres, speaking for the education committee, said the program’s state winner, Nyla Dinkins, performed recently at Lisner Auditorium and won three contests in succession. "Our state winner, Nyla Dinkins, actually, 2 weeks ago or so performed at the, Lisner Auditorium and actually won 3 of of all 3 competitions literally done without brilliant," Torres said. He and other commissioners said the program brings students and teachers together, and commissioners asked colleagues to attend upcoming Saturday morning shows to support participants.
Why this matters: Poetry Out Loud and similar education programs connect students with schools and teachers and are a public example of CAH’s K‑12 outreach.
No formal action was taken; staff requested commissioners help publicize student showcases and attend performances.
