Council approves $166,800 change order to add sprinkler system at North EMS station

Talbot County Council approved a $166,800 change order Tuesday to add a building-wide sprinkler system to the North EMS station under construction, after the county’s fire marshal required sprinkler coverage for the four-bay garage area.
County Engineer Ray Clark said the fire marshal’s review determined sprinklers are required in the garage bays, which in turn requires a 25,000-gallon holding tank to supply the system. Clark said the original project budget included sprinklers for the sleeping and office areas, but not the garage bay; the change order increases the project scope to meet the fire marshal’s requirement.
Clark told the council the change order (bid 24-14, change order number 3) will be issued to the industrial engineering company and that sufficient funds exist in the project budget to cover the amount. “This should be, hopefully, the last time we come back to you,” Clark said.
Council approved the change order by recorded vote. Staff said other tasks remain, including an entrance and coordination with the Maryland Transit Administration for a licensing agreement. The council anticipates a ribbon-cutting later this year once construction and inspections are complete.
