Manager plans to seek new contract for trash service; Miami‑Dade currently continuing service after contract expiry

Interim City Manager Shamika Lawson told commissioners May 28 that Miami‑Dade County continues to provide solid waste collection services to the City of Opa-locka despite an expired contract.
Lawson said the county will continue service while the city moves toward an RFP process to select a long‑term provider. She told the commission it is her recommendation not to renew the county arrangement and that staff intends to bring an RFP and recommendation to the commission by the second meeting in June or the first meeting in July.
Commissioners asked about continuity and how long the county contract has been expired; Lawson said the contract had expired before her tenure and the county has continued to provide service. She said county staff has been responsive and will continue service during the interim. Lawson also said a vendor had expressed interest previously and staff will include appropriate analysis in the RFP.
No formal contract award or termination was approved at the meeting; the manager stated an intent to solicit bids and return with a recommendation for the commission to act upon.
