Phelps third graders present cross-curricular nonfiction projects to school committee

Third-grade students from Phelps Elementary presented research-and-presentation projects to the Rockland School Committee on May 27, showcasing nonfiction research, paragraph writing, digital slides and artwork created during an interdisciplinary unit.
Acting Principal Kelsey Holbrook introduced the segment and said the school’s mission is for students to be "active, engaged participants in their learning." Third-grade teacher Angela Solmonte led student presenters through examples, and students explained research sources (library books, the Franklin Park Zoo website and the Epic digital-library service), paragraph structure and how they used Chromebooks and Google Slides to assemble their presentations.
Students displayed artwork and described classroom activities that integrated math (area and perimeter work for a hypothetical animal exhibit), art (posters created with crayons, markers and watercolors) and writing. Teachers said the class will visit Franklin Park Zoo in a few weeks to observe animals featured in student projects and invited parents to an "author’s share" on June 11 to view slideshows and artwork.
Committee members and attendees praised the students’ presentations and research skills. The committee took no formal action on the presentation; it was presented as part of the curriculum corner.
