Wayne County engineering staff asked commissioners on Oct. 11 to approve amendments to professional services contracts with Wade Trim Associates to provide during- and post-construction engineering services for two bridge projects: the Baseline Road bridge (deck replacement) between Novi Road and Griswold Street in Northville, and the Elba Drive bridge over Elba Canal in Grosse Ile Township.
Anika, director of engineering, said the Baseline Road work is anticipated to begin in January and that retaining the designer during construction is standard practice to answer questions that arise, coordinate with the railroad where right-of-entry and flagging are required, and perform post-construction testing required by MDOT. "We want to, as a practice, to keep them on board for any questions that might arise during construction and to do any testing required by MDOT after the project is completed," Anika said.
Staff said the Elba Drive amendment serves the same purpose: keeping the design firm available to support construction coordination and to conduct load ratings after the build to submit to MDOT. Both amendments were included and approved in the consent motion for items 1–9.
