Millersville University alumni at a spring fundraising gathering said they have raised more than $70,000 for scholarships that support student-athletes, and that the Mac endowment principal sits at roughly $80,000 with a goal of $100,000.
The university’s director of alumni engagement, Chelsea Worth, described the current distribution rules for the fund: “That scholarship set up ... 75% of the scholarship goes to a football student athlete and 25% goes to another male student athlete of a different program,” she said. Worth told attendees the endowment principal is “about $80,000” and that leaders hope to grow it to $100,000 over the next few years.
Why it matters: the alumni-raised dollars pay tuition and program costs that Millersville said help student-athletes avoid working during the school year and maintain academic performance. Worth and other organizers pointed to named recipients to illustrate impact: Beau Meekum, a junior on the golf team, and Josh (surname not specified), a football player, were identified as recent scholarship recipients. Worth said she planned to set up a summer Zoom so donors could meet the recipients.
Alumni gave examples of where additional gifts would be directed, including general operational support, stadium renovation work and a new scoreboard. Worth also explained multiple giving options attendees might use, including IRA qualified charitable distributions at age 70/72, estate gifts, insurance-beneficiary arrangements and gifts of securities.
Speakers emphasized both one-time and permanent contributions. Worth noted the value of endowments that “will roll forward forever,” while organizer Mike Panarelli and others described naming opportunities for facility donations. The alumni office listed upcoming events and appeals tied to fundraising, including a wall of honor celebration, a golf tournament and homecoming dates scheduled for the fall.
The gathering combined donor outreach, updates on scholarship recipients and a pitch for further donations; organizers asked alumni to consider financial gifts as well as continued engagement with current students and the program.
