Wayne County seeks three-year purchase order for guardrail parts as replacements rise

Wayne County road-maintenance officials told commissioners on Oct. 11 they are seeking approval of a three-year purchase order, with two one-year renewal options, for guardrail beams, parts and accessories to replenish stocks used in high-speed crash locations.
Steve Shadd, division director of road maintenance, said material prices have risen and the county has seen more frequent hits to guardrails. "I've replaced that twice already at $16,000 a pop," Shadd said of one Outer Drive near M-10 location where vehicles have repeatedly struck the barrier. He described sites where vehicles swerve off high-speed roadways, knock down trees and posts, and in some cases risk entering waterways.
Commissioners asked about signage and other countermeasures. Staff said signs along the most-impacted corridors have repeatedly been knocked down and that, while the county has discussed cameras and attenuators, no camera installations have been implemented as of the meeting.
The consent motion approving items 1–9, which included this purchase order request, carried by roll call Oct. 11.
