Commissioner Snell moved on May 20 to refer the county’s handling of temporary signs in rights of way to the county administrator and controller for review and possible policy drafting. The motion passed with support and no recorded opposition.
Commissioner Snell said he wanted the administrator to re-examine an earlier decision on sign pickup and the different ordinances used by individual townships. “I'd like that referred back to the administrator for some more work on that,” Commissioner Snell said. He asked that political signage be exempt from township pickup and that administrators produce a model the county could use across townships.
Vice Chairman Corey Kennedy cautioned that many townships have independently adopted sign ordinances and that county authority to supersede township rules may be limited. “If we're gonna do this, hopefully, Commissioner Snell realizes some of these townships went about themselves of making their own ordinance. So we'd probably need to look at those, and I would hope that the county 1 would supersede the township 1,” Commissioner Kennedy said, adding that legal review would be necessary.
Commissioner Dukham asked the administrator to clarify what the review should cover. County staff or the administrator will review current township ordinances and return guidance on whether a blanket county policy is feasible and legally permissible.
The board did not adopt a new county rule at the meeting; it referred the issue to the administrator and controller for review and legal evaluation.
