Columbia County commissioners approved a $38,165,487.05 contract with Reeves Construction to widen Hardin–Gamanis Road, the county announced during its Services Committee meeting.
County staff told the committee the original low bid received in March was nearly $44 million and over budget; the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) program added $5.2 million for inflation and staff negotiated roughly $5.6 million in contractor reductions to reach the final contract figure. Staff said just over $2 million of the project will be funded from the county stormwater utility, with the remainder drawn from TIA and other county project funds.
The contract covers the road widening and associated work; county staff said right-of-way acquisition is complete and certified for the portion that was previously under negotiation. Staff said once the contract is in force, tree removal and visible site work will start within about 45 days.
The manager who presented the item credited several county offices, including TIA and project management, for identifying funding and value-engineering opportunities that avoided canceling the project.
County staff moved the item on the consent calendar and it was approved during the meeting.
