North County Transit District forecasts $9 million shortfall, council hears budget update

Deputy Mayor Sunella reported to the San Marcos City Council on May 27 that North County Transit District (NCTD) board members received an operating-budget update projecting about a $9,000,000 shortfall for fiscal year 2026 and a budget outlook through 2030.
Sunella said the board discussed options for closing the gap, including using reserves or cutting services, and that the budget statement was a forecast rather than a finalized plan. "NCTD is forecasting about a 9 a $9,000,000, budget shortfall for, the coming year," Sunella said.
Council members asked whether the shortfall represented an unanticipated emergency or ongoing operating costs; Sunella replied it appeared to be tied to ongoing operating expenses and not a one-time emergency.
No council action was taken; Sunella said discussions about closing the gap will continue at NCTD board meetings and may be reported back to member cities.
