Jennifer Gift, program supervisor with Vista Community Clinic's Tobacco Control Program, told the San Marcos City Council on May 27 that the clinic has gathered more than 500 public comments โ including many from San Marcos residents โ about youth vaping, substance use and mental wellness.
"Over the past 2 years, actually, we have collected over 500 community voices, including many from San Marcos residents, who strongly believe in protecting the health of our youth and young adults from the harms of tobacco use," Gift said. She thanked Mayor Jones and Deputy Mayor Sunella for attending a community forum called "A Piece of the Action."
Gift said community contributors described rising curiosity and interest in smoking and vaping among younger children and urged the council to "take time to read their comments and thoughtfully consider their words." She connected vaping prevention to broader youth mental-health and wellness work discussed earlier in the meeting.
The council accepted the presentation; no new ordinance or funding action was proposed or taken at the meeting. Gift left materials with the city clerk for the record and requested the council review community input as it considers prevention and youth-health measures.
