Brady Ballard, general manager of the Corpus Christi Hooks, reported to the board that the team completed a series of safety and longevity projects at Whataburger Field that the club said reduce trip hazards and address player- and fan-safety elements.
"We were able to tie into that and extend it per what was required of us as a as a minor league baseball facility," Ballard said, describing netting extensions in left and right field that used existing support poles. He showed before-and-after photos and said crews widened steps and replaced deteriorated concrete in several locations including the seating bowl, concourse level, player tunnel and walkways behind center field.
Ballard described steel repairs around the video board where the club could reach the structure and noted there are steel elements that will remain for future work because the video board must come down to access them safely. "There are some pieces that we'll look to align with in the future. We simply can't get to them because of the video board to do that correctly," he said.
He said operations replaced seats in seven sections—work completed by January—and that many of the original seats dated to the 2005 build and required frequent ad-hoc repairs. "Our operations team was replacing upwards of 500 seats a season. So that has all now gone away," Ballard said, adding that some replacement seats came from other local parks.
Ballard thanked the board for support and noted the park hosts events beyond baseball, including community health fairs and high-school playoff games that bring hotel occupancy and visitor spending to the area. He said the club plans further improvements as access to the video board permits but described the recent work as primarily structural and focused on longevity rather than aesthetic upgrades.
Board members thanked Ballard for the update. The transcript records no formal board action tied to the presentation; it was provided as an informational project update.
