CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston County Council proclaimed June 2025 as Gun Violence Prevention Month and heard remarks from local organizers and family members affected by gun violence.
Council read a resolution recognizing gun violence as a critical public safety issue and encouraging community participation in events, educational programs and advocacy for responsible firearm ownership. The proclamation was presented in the meeting and identified Reverend Doctor Kylan Jerome Middleton as chairman on the document.
Speakers from the community described ongoing outreach and intervention work. Ronald Smith and members of his group Ronald Positive Vibe (referred to in the meeting as Ronald Positive Vibe, Roger A. Smith Inc.) described street-level outreach, retaliation prevention and grief caused by the loss of Smith’s daughter. Katrina Sinclair, identified herself as the mother of Rodney (Rodney/Ronald) Smith’s daughter, thanked the group for support and described local boots-on-the-ground response following the tragedy.
Council members and attendees thanked the organizers and urged continued work on violence prevention. Council did not record a roll-call vote for the proclamation in the transcript; the resolution text was read into the record and speakers from the community were invited to address the council.
