Maura Hennigan, the clerk magistrate for the Suffolk Superior Court Criminal Division and a former Boston City Councilor, asked the Ways and Means Committee to support restoration of the Hennigan School community center pool during a May 28 public testimony session.
Hennigan said the pool “has been closed for quite some time” and that the site serves a neighborhood with limited access to aquatic facilities, including nearby veterans who “do not have a pool as well.” She urged councilors to consider both capital investment for structural repairs and operating funds to restore programming.
Luisa Harris, a Jamaica Plain–Mission Hill resident, told the committee the April 10 community meeting drew more than 100 attendees and an online petition with nearly 400 signatures, and asked the council to prioritize the Hennigan pool to fulfill the city’s Swim Safe initiative, which Mayor Michelle Wu announced to expand swim access for children.
Witnesses did not provide a specific dollar request at the hearing but emphasized both capital and operating needs and asked for community-focused administration of the center. Councilors said they would consider testimony as they review capital and operating amendments; the hearing produced no formal vote or appropriation on the pool.
