Airport staff outline fly‑in plans, anniversary events and rising fuel sales

Airport staff updated officials on plans for an upcoming fly‑in event, the airport’s 30th anniversary celebration and the city’s sesquicentennial events, and said fuel sales at the airport remain high.

The update matters to pilots, tenants and residents because it affects airport operations, public access to airport events and on‑site vehicle and aircraft movement during the event.

Staff said the primary fly‑in activities that had previously been held in Moorhead Aviation’s larger hangar will move to King Aviation’s hangar and the car show will be placed around the tee hangars to increase cohesion among participants. Staff said the pancake feed and sign‑in booths for groups such as the EAA will change locations accordingly. The event will include recognition of the airport’s 30th anniversary, the city’s 150th anniversary and a ribbon cutting tied to an airport name change for “Florence Kling and Smith.”

Staff expressed optimism about turnout but noted weather will be a factor. A board member asked whether additional outreach or lobbying could increase federal funding for the airport’s shortfalls; staff reiterated that some funding streams are fixed and that competitive grants are not guaranteed.

On routine business, staff noted that Moorhead Aviation and King Aviation report fuel sales remain “up and high,” indicating increased activity at the airport. The staff member who supplied that update noted that both FBOs said they are busy when asked in person.
