The Whitehouse City Council voted May 27 to approve a resolution supporting a grant application to the National Fitness Campaign for a $50,000 award to build an outdoor fitness court at Shahan Park.
Parks planner Aaron Martinez said the fitness court was identified through community input during the Shahan Park concept-planning surveys and would provide accessible, bolted-down outdoor exercise equipment that connects to an instructional app. Martinez said the total project cost is about $180,800; the city expects the grant to offset roughly $50,000 and plans to include the balance in park planning and capital funds.
Martinez said the campaign allows some flexibility on schedule and staff told the council construction would likely occur in the fourth quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027 so the installation can align with the park timeline. Council discussed options for shade canopies to increase year-round usability; staff said canopy and cover options are available though they add cost.
Council approved the resolution unanimously and staff said they will pursue additional partners and health-care partners to offset remaining costs and to incorporate the fitness court into the Shahan Park project plan.
