Toby, owner of I Love Goodness Gracious, said the Carmel restaurant has been open eight months and features a "food legacy" program in which customers submit family recipes that are turned into rotating menu items.
The program, Toby said, grew out of a long-held personal interest: she purchased the domain Ilovegoodnessgracious.com in 2011 and eventually opened the restaurant after developing a concept of curated picnics and homestyle dishes. "I had the concept of making picnics, being a picnic curator," she said.
The restaurant's aesthetic is deliberately personal, Toby said, drawn from vintage and family items: "My storage unit is finally empty and my house is empty. This type of eclectic vintage, you know, warm and cozy, feeling is my style. It's just very personal. Everything has a story or a reason." An interviewer noted those personal touches and the way the owner's family and personality appear in the space.
Toby said the food legacy program aims to preserve family food traditions and provide emotional connections for customers. She described the program's process: customers submit a recipe and the kitchen will prepare it as a featured dish. She said the program has had an emotional effect on some families, citing her own family experience: her mother had Alzheimer's and, after entering memory care, lost the ability to cook; celebrating recipes can offer a way to honor those memories.
The conversation also traced the restaurant's origin story: Toby said she kept the domain name for years despite uncertainty about funding and eventually opened the business in Carmel after attending a concert in the park, which she described as an inspirational moment that contributed to her decision to launch the restaurant.
No formal actions or policy decisions were discussed in the recorded segment; the exchange was a short interview-style profile focused on the restaurant's concept, origin and community-oriented menu feature.
