Council approves Class A liquor license for Mchenry Golf Club

At a special City Council meeting on May 27, the council voted to approve a Class A liquor license for Mchenry Golf Club, located at 820 North John Street.
The action replaces a lapsed restaurant liquor license that was tied to a planned tenant and clears the way for the club’s owner to serve alcohol at booked events while the on-site restaurant and kitchen complete health-department requirements. "I'm looking for a motion to approve a Class A liquor license for the Mchenry Golf Club Incorporated located at 820 North John Street," the city clerk said before the motion was made.
Alderman Doherty made the motion to approve the license. The council then voted by roll call; the minutes show affirmative votes from Alderman Doherty, Alderman Miller, Alderman Bainie, Alderman Glab, Alderman Bassi and Alderman Cook. Alderman Davis was recorded as absent. The motion carried.
City staff explained that the planned restaurant tenant, Addison's Steakhouse, had not opened and did not renew its license by the April 30 renewal deadline, leaving no active restaurant liquor license at that address. The clerk told the council: "Ed Hintz, who is the owner of the club, has requested the liquor license so that way they can actually do business there and have a liquor license for the events that they have booked." The club had used interim catering from Buddy's Pizza for recent events while its kitchen work continued.
One council member added historical context on licensing: "The Mchenry Country Club had their own liquor license before when it was Metalwood Grill; Metalwood Grill was the name of the restaurant — they were not the liquor license holder," the speaker said, adding that the current move returns the license to the club entity now called Mchenry Golf Club.
Council members did not record any abstentions or opposing votes in the roll call for the license. No formal directions to staff or additional conditions were recorded along with the approval. After the vote, council members wished the club and owner Ed Hintz luck as they continued to ready the facility for full operation.
