The DeKalb City Council on May 27 authorized acceptance of a tree-equity grant and awarded a contract for hazardous-tree removal and pruning under the grant.
City staff reported the city received a $255,300 award from the Morton Arboretum under a Tree Equity grant for disadvantaged communities. The grant scope includes removing roughly 40 hazardous trees in 2025 and pruning about 738 parkway trees. The city sought competitive bids and received three responses; the lowest responsible bidder was D. Ryan Tree and Landscaping Service LLC at $230,300.
"We were awarded $255,300 for a, quote, tree equity grant for disadvantaged communities, unquote," the city manager said. The council approved Resolution 2025-062 to award the contract to D. Ryan by unanimous roll call.
The Public Works and Forestry divisions will implement the work under the grant’s requirements; staff noted the Morton Arboretum grant carries specific pruning and removal standards that differ from some utility pruning practices. The council and staff said the work will remove failing trees and improve conditions for younger trees in parkways and public open spaces.
