Tampa Bay Water awards $1.4M engineering contract for Cypress Creek Wellfield improvements

The Tampa Bay Water board approved a professional engineering services contract on May 19 to design improvements at the Cypress Creek Wellfield, one of the utility’s largest groundwater facilities.
Chief engineering staff described the work as part of the authority’s ongoing well‑field improvements program, which proactively renews aging infrastructure, modernizes pumps and motors, improves energy efficiency and strengthens system reliability. The program covers 11 well fields; three have been completed, three are ongoing and five remain to be scheduled.
Staff recommended, and the board approved, awarding engineering services to McKim and Creed for $1,400,000, which includes a $168,000 owner’s allowance. The scope covers pump and motor design, electrical upgrades, well‑house upgrades, surge protection, hydraulic modeling, permitting coordination and procurement support.
Board action: motion to approve the engineering services contract was moved by Councilman Miranda (motion recorded) and seconded; the clerk recorded the motion as passing unanimously.
The contract is intended to reduce operational risk by modernizing equipment and improving energy performance; staff said the program reduces the need for Tampa Bay Water to maintain specialized boats, equipment or full-time field teams for all monitoring and upgrades.
