Logan council prioritizes improving city communications; asks mayor and staff for options

Council members raised concerns that city residents do not always know about projects and services, and they asked the mayor and administration to develop options for improving communications.

Council member said, “I think funding to better communicate with our citizens is something if we have the ability to do that out of the council budget, I think that would be a good idea,” during a policy discussion at the budget workshop. Several council members and staff suggested short‑term and longer‑term approaches, including a part‑time intern, contracted support, or reallocating existing staff time. The mayor and administration were asked to return with two or more alternatives and cost estimates for council consideration.

Discussion points included centralizing communications so information is easier for residents to find, improving two‑way channels for feedback, and clarifying that existing departmental communications vary in scope and reach. Staff noted practical constraints around social‑media notice rules, subscriber lists tied to utility billing, and the need to coordinate across multiple departments. One council member referenced a nearby city’s weekly email as an example of a concise, repeatable communication product.

The council did not adopt a funding change during the workshop but set improving communications as a strategic budget priority and asked staff to propose options and budgets for future consideration.
