Sycamore CUSD 427 board recognizes students for FFA, art, bowling, youth-government and track achievements

Kara Pointer, a district teacher, brought forward students who earned the state-level FA degree, which she described as “the highest degree an FA member can get in the state of Illinois,” and said the award requires about eight qualifications including GPA, classes taken, record-keeping, earnings and community service. Pointer named Sage Kleckner, who held three jobs during his program and obtained his current placement with Mark’s Lawn Service through a job fair, and a student identified as Maggie, who completed her project on her horses and a poultry business selling eggs. Pointer said the students will be recognized at the state convention in two weeks.
Erin DeWitt presented three of the district’s 14 entries to the interscholastic art conference and read prepared remarks about student work. DeWitt said the district’s entrants earned multiple top placements and that “one of our students was awarded best in show,” a recognition she attributed to student Bree. DeWitt described art-making as requiring “hours of focus, effort, problem solving, and vulnerability,” and praised the students for taking creative risks.
Representatives for Sycamore Middle School noted the middle-school bowling season runs about three weeks and drew roughly 95 teams statewide. Presenters named state finishers from the program, saying one boy placed 15th (earning a top‑15 medal) and the girls team finished third in the state; named recipients included Jordan Ziegler, Lily Harper and Savannah Wood among others.
A Youth in Government group that traveled to Springfield was also recognized. Board presenters said district students advanced bills through committee and into one chamber or the other; several students earned individual forum placements or leadership roles, including two students elected as committee chairs at the state level. The board’s remarks described Youth in Government as a YMCA-sponsored program that simulates the legislative process at the Illinois State Capitol.
Jo McCormick presented the girls track team, saying the program set a season goal to win the conference and met that goal for the first time in 25 years. McCormick listed student qualifiers and all‑conference performers including Kenna Butler (shot put), Krista Cobb (discus), Alyssa Stacy (sprints), Jordan Leesville (pole vault) and others, and said the senior class will be missed while underclassmen will carry the program forward.
Board leadership thanked coaches, parents and nominators for submitting students for recognition and for attending. Meeting leadership closed the recognitions portion by thanking those present and recessed the board for 42 minutes, with plans to reconvene in the library to continue the scheduled meeting.
The recognitions were acknowledgments of student achievement; the board took no formal votes related to the awards during the portion of the meeting captured in the transcript.
