Medina City Council on Tuesday adopted an ordinance amending the salaries and benefits code to adjust pay for several elected positions and related offices, while postponing individual council-member pay increases until office terms begin in 2028.
Councilmember Rose, who chaired the committee, said the ordinance corrects a previous discrepancy that left the mayor paid less than the finance director and recognizes additional duties of the mayor and the council president. The ordinance keeps current council-member pay unchanged through the next two-year period and schedules adjustments that will take effect after the 2027 election cycle and when new terms begin in 2028.
Rose said the changes place salaries in the mid-range compared with comparable Northeast Ohio cities. Councilmembers Coyne and another member abstained from the finance committee deliberations because of potential conflicts; the ordinance was presented and approved by the full council on a recorded roll call vote.
Why it matters: State law requires salaries for elected offices be set before filing deadlines and the ordinance sets salaries for the positions rather than for named individuals. Council members discussed the timing and mechanics so all council members’ pay will increase at the same time rather than incrementally as members come up in the election cycle.
Council action: Ordinance 103-25 was moved, seconded and adopted on a roll call vote recorded as passing; the transcript indicates council approved the ordinance at the meeting. The ordinance includes changes to the mayor’s pay, the finance director’s pay and the council president’s pay; council-member increases were deferred until 2028.
Ending: The ordinance establishes new pay steps for the listed offices; council will implement the changes consistent with state law and the applicable filing deadlines.
