The District English Learner Advisory Committee (DLAC) presented its annual report and recommendations to the Bassett Unified School District Board of Education on May 27, 2025, asking the district to increase communication about EL student growth and to strengthen instruction and family engagement supports.
The committee’s presentation opened with an overview of the 2024–25 highlights and was introduced under the authority of “California Code of Regulations, Title 5, section 11308,” which the committee cited while explaining DLAC’s statutory charge to make annual recommendations on English-learner matters. Marco Martinez, a DLAC presenter, told the board, “Parents appreciated the reclassification ceremony this year. It was great to see our students be honored for their achievement.”
The DLAC gave eight specific recommendations for 2025–26. The group urged the district to share student-growth data more frequently with the community — academic results and attendance — and to develop a classroom-support framework “that reinforces teachers’ commitment to creating a classroom environment in which English learners feel respected, safe, and supported.” They recommended a K–12 math scope and sequence with common resources, a math task force to lead professional development, and a focused EL task force to identify essential ELA/ELD standards and expand professional development for ELD teachers. The group also suggested considering an ELD coordinator and adding student or parent testimonials to the reclassification ceremony, offering incentives or special T-shirts to boost parent participation in site committees, and hosting cultural events at each school.
Board members thanked the committee and asked staff to follow up. Board members did not take formal action during the presentation; several trustees expressed interest in receiving a status update on implementation at a future meeting so the board and the community could track which recommendations the district adopts and when.
The DLAC presentation is informational; it provides input for the board and staff as they prepare next year’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) priorities and professional‑development plans for ELD and intervention services.
The board president and superintendent acknowledged the committee’s work and indicated they would schedule follow-up reporting so the board can review which recommendations are implemented and what resources will be required.
