Sandy, presenting on behalf of both middle schools, said staff have seen increasing breakage and wear of PE locks and proposed a one‑time sixth‑grade fee of $15 to provide student locks that would last for the middle‑school years. She explained the $15 figure is intended to cover current lock costs (about $13.14) and provide buffer for future price increases.
The second proposal would raise the Mountain View Middle School cooking class fee from $20 to $30 per trimester. Sandy said current supply costs run about $1,200 per trimester for the class and that the district does not collect all fees; raising the fee is intended to help cover materials. "We don't always get all of the fees paid for, so we're hoping to bump it to 30 with all the inflation," she said.
Board members asked how families who cannot afford fees are supported. Sandy said staff work with families on payment plans or waive fees when inability to pay would prevent participation. "We want your kid to experience art or cooking, and we just absorb that cost," she said. Board members discussed whether the process for fee waivers is automatic or requires family outreach; counselors and other staff said it can be invoked through school forms or by families reaching out.
No vote was held Tuesday; the presenter said "This is action next time." The board will see the formal fee changes on the next meeting agenda for a vote.
