Commission approves purchase of storage shed and mobile concession trailer for recreation department

Meriwether County commissioners voted May 20 to buy a 12-by-32 storage shed and a mobile concession trailer for the county recreation department to support upcoming tournaments and events.

Staff recommended two purchases: a 12x32 Sturdy Buildings storage shed to hold mowers and equipment, and a 7x16 concession trailer (mobile unit) to provide flexible food-service capacity at tournaments and outreach events. The trailer offers plumbing, hot water, refrigeration capacity and a 50-amp service circuit; the county can plug it in at fields or run it from a generator. Staff argued mobility would help the department support multiple events, including a July state tournament the county will host.

The combined recommended purchase price, including some minor upgrades and a generator, was presented as roughly $30,000. Commissioners favored the mobile unit for its flexibility; a motion carried to approve the purchase and to fund the purchases with SPLOST funds and LGIP interest. One commissioner abstained because of a longstanding business affiliation with the vendor, and staff said they would verify any necessary health-department inspections before operation.

Recreation Director provided practical details: the storage shed will store field equipment including mowers and chalking machines; the concession trailer includes a hot-water heater and gray-water capacity, but staff said they would continue outdoor grilling for most food preparation to avoid installing a commercial hood/suppression system. Commission and staff noted concession trailers typically lack interior cooking hoods and that grills are commonly used outside for tournament concessions.

Staff will confirm health-department inspection requirements and secure any necessary approvals from the school board for siting at school facilities. The trailer and shed are expected to be operational in time for scheduled summer events.
