Committee advances gift to replace vandalized playground equipment at Wahiawa District Park

The Honolulu City Council Committee on Parks on May 27 advanced Resolution 25-148 to accept donated playground equipment and installation valued at $52,500 from Inspired Play Hawaii for Wahiawa District Park to replace equipment recently damaged by vandalism.
Department of Parks and Recreation Director Laura Thielen said the donor contacted the department after reading about the vandalism and offered equipment that was being removed from another location; DPR inspected the pieces and determined they were in good condition and from a licensed vendor already contracted to install resilient rubber surfacing. The donor will remove, transport and install the donated play structure, and DPR expects installation within days of acceptance.
DPR said the quick replacement was unprecedented and intended to send a community message about protecting play spaces; no in-person testimony was recorded and the committee forwarded the resolution to the full council by unanimous consent.
