Manoa Aquatics and Mamizuka family donate starting blocks as committee advances pool equipment gift

The Honolulu City Council Committee on Parks on May 27 advanced Resolution 25-147, accepting the donation of eight spectrum dual-post starting platforms (starting blocks) bearing the Mamizuka crest, valued at $67,224.85, for the Harry M. Mamizuka swimming complex at Manoa Valley District Park.
Director Laura Thielen said the department is delighted with the gift and noted the city previously renamed the pool after Harry M. Mamizuka in 1999. Kanekoa Crabbe, president of Manoa Aquatics, testified in support, describing how long-term pool closures have reduced swimmers and volunteers and urging the city to complete renovations so the Manoa pool can again host public swim meets. Crabbe said that on Oʻahu, the publicly available meet-capable pools are limited to Kailua, Kaneohe and Waipio Gentry, requiring many Honolulu-area clubs to travel for meets.
The committee advanced Resolution 25-147 to the full council by unanimous consent. The Department of Parks and Recreation said it has been repairing the pool floor, plaster and tile and welcomed the Mamizuka family’s contribution as part of the broader renovation effort.
