Coppell — The Coppell City Council on May 27 granted a 20-foot distance variance to Silk Road Indian Cuisine and Bar, allowing on-premise sale of mixed beverages at 160 West Sandy Lake Road, Suite 100.
City staff presented the public hearing item and noted that section 616.3 of the city code "prohibits the sale of alcohol within 300 feet of a church, public school, or private school." The subject parcel is approximately 280 feet from Coppell Montessori Academy, creating the need for a variance of 20 feet to the city's 300-foot buffer.
Staff noted a similar variance had been granted for the tenant in that suite previously, and that the restaurant's planned hours would mirror the former tenant's hours (approximately 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday). The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) enforces a separate 1,000-foot statutory proximity requirement from schools; staff explained that TABC's 1,000-foot rule is a separate process the applicant must address with TABC, and the local 300-foot ordinance is the city's discretionary standard.
After a public hearing with no speakers signed up, Council member Prem Kumar moved to approve the variance and Council member Matthew Hill seconded; the council voted unanimously in favor. The council's action clears a local step in the licensing process; the applicant must still obtain required state permits from TABC.
