Committee approves donation of commemorative bench for Manoa Valley District Park

The Honolulu City Council Committee on Parks on May 27 advanced Resolution 25-116, accepting a donated high-back traditional bench, installation and a bronze plaque valued at $2,521.67 from Stephanie Deegan to be placed at Manoa Valley District Park.
Director Laura Thielen said the Department of Parks and Recreation supports the contribution and expressed gratitude to donors for helping furnish parks. Kanekoa Crabbe, president of Manoa Aquatics, testified in person on behalf of the nonprofit swim club, thanking the department and describing the club’s desire to reopen and renovate the Harry M. Mamizuka swimming complex; Crabbe said the donation and other work would help the pool become eligible to host public swim meets.
The committee heard that the Mamizuka family is donating eight starting blocks valued at $67,224.85 (separate Resolution 25-147) as part of the pool’s improvement efforts. Committee members advanced Resolution 25-116 out of committee by unanimous consent for final action by the full council.
The Department of Parks and Recreation noted the city previously renamed the Manoa Pool the Harry M. Mamizuka swimming complex in 1999 and is coordinating ongoing pool repairs and upgrades.
