County opens bids for Washington 42 bridge materials; only one timely bidder for most items

County engineers opened bids for materials for the Washington 42 bridge replacement project and reported a low response rate from material suppliers.
Assistant Engineer Brandon Burmeister and Engineer John Rasmussen told the board they received one timely bid for piles, miscellaneous materials and steel beams and one bid for the deck. A second bidder on some items submitted its package after the cutoff and was not opened. The timely bidder for piling and beams, Odin Enterprises of Wahoo, Nebraska, submitted several line-item bids: piling $83,444.04; miscellaneous materials $35,040.40; steel beams $146,076.75. The deck bid was from Wheeler of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, at $140,050.
Rasmussen said the estimates were based on a similar bridge bid conducted about a year earlier and that price increases and different beam lengths/weights explained cost differences. The board did not award contracts at the meeting; Rasmussen said bids would be brought back the following week for award decisions.
Why it matters: The Washington 42 bridge replacement is a scheduled capital road project. Limited bidder response can affect schedule and cost, and county staff said one bidder’s pricing was roughly 12% above internal estimates.
