City staff told the finance committee that the city owns the building housing the library and is responsible for capital maintenance. Staff presented a repair estimate to replace the flat portion of the library roof, at a quoted price of $35,287.
“The library…they are willing to contribute 50% of that $35,287,” staff said. Staff described the roof area as roughly 2,000 square feet on the back half of the building; the front portion has a pitched roof that was replaced about 8–10 years ago. The staff speaker explained the building was formerly a post office and that the enclosed back portion with a flat roof has had ongoing leakage problems.
Staff said the work would require a budget amendment because the expense was not included in the current budget. The committee was told the contractor has honored last year's pricing and that staff expects the replacement to occur within about 60 days if the committee moves forward; staff also said they would check purchasing rules and rebid if required.
Committee members emphasized the need to protect library contents and agreed the repair should proceed. No formal vote was taken in committee; staff said they will include the request as part of upcoming budget amendments and move forward with procurement as required.
