Auburn’s public‑input survey draws hundreds as city promotes comp‑plan outreach

Auburn planning staff and consultants reported several hundred responses to the city’s community‑visioning outreach, citing strong participation from students and targeted distribution of paper surveys to housing residents.
Ally (consultant outreach lead) told the committee that the Social Pinpoint engagement site had logged 321 individual visitors, 23 email sign‑ups, 17 idea posts on the ideas wall and six map posts. On the community survey, staff reported 87 responses to the general community visioning survey. A separate school outreach effort produced 140 high‑school responses and 285 middle‑school responses.
Lauren Caffey, Auburn’s long‑range planner, said the city mailed a printed notice and survey link to all residential mailing addresses — “in the order of 10,000” addresses — to reach both owners and renters. Staff also distributed printed surveys directly: Spooner Estates and the Auburn Housing Authority (12 buildings) were given paper copies for residents; the Taylor Pond Watershed Association posted the survey on its channels; and Central Maine Community College circulated the survey through its newsletters.
Consultants and staff asked committee members to encourage distribution and said printed packets collected by housing managers will be returned during the week the survey closes. Staff indicated the survey will be closed on June 6 to allow responses from the recent mailing; committee members were asked to promote the survey before that date.
The outreach report is intended to broaden participation before subcommittees begin chapter‑level review of the inventory and analysis. Staff asked committee members to notify planning staff if they know additional organizations or individuals who should receive the materials or be invited to subcommittee meetings.
