Council extends Torpedo Factory leases, pledges update on operator RFP

Alexandria City Council on May 27 approved a one-year extension of leases for artists and arts organizations at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center and told the public it will receive an update in June on an active request for proposals to identify a potential future operator.
Vice Mayor Amy Bagley moved the item from the consent docket and explained the extensions ensure artists juried into the 2022 pool will not have leases ending this year. Bagley said the city issued an RFP in April seeking potential operators for the Torpedo Factory and that staff committed to return to council with an update in June (staff indicated a June 10 update on the schedule).
Bagley moved approval of the lease extensions, Councilman Chapman seconded, and a roll-call vote recorded all members present voting aye. The mayor and council members said they wanted staff to provide more details to the artist community at the June briefing. No changes to lease terms were discussed at the meeting.
