Danville staff and partners seek next steps after Boyle County pulls back on Jenny Rogers childcare model

City Manager Earl Coffey said the issue is "fluid" and that the initial meeting produced a long discussion but no final decision. Coffey described differences between a childcare facility and a preschool model: the Pulaski County model the group examined operates as a full childcare facility that can grow enrollment across age bands, whereas treating the space primarily as a preschool (daytime-only) differs operationally and financially.
Coffey said the school district and early-childhood stakeholders still need to adjust the model and the city intends to convene follow-up meetings after school graduations and other calendar constraints. He said the city's current financial exposure is limited: the city's income from the facility is tied to an existing lease, and "there are currently no changes to the lease" discussed at the meeting.
Staff reported the key challenges are operational (extended hours, staffing and how a childcare facility absorbs early start-up costs) and that Pulaski County's center — cited as a successful model — serves roughly 250 children, a scale the Jenny Rogers concept has not yet reached.
Coffey said staff will research the Pulaski County model and reconvene stakeholders; the commission received no request at this meeting to appropriate city funds for the facility and no immediate budget change was proposed.
