Danville parks director reports pool repairs, summer programming and July Paint the Park plans

The Danville City Commission received a parks update outlining recent repairs, summer program schedules and planned community events.
Parks director Tommy Parton said the city’s pool — which required extensive repairs last year — has been open and “seems to be holding,” though staff noted one unexplained day of low water. He said splash pads require a new gauge at Michael Smith Park and that Lexington Avenue splash-pad repairs may be more extensive; staff expect Michael Smith to be operational by the weekend.
Parton outlined programming: day camp, swim team and tennis lessons begin Monday, June 2; Jackson Park block party is scheduled for June 7 (11 a.m.–3 p.m.); Michael Smith park will host a Juneteenth-tied block party on June 21 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.); and Paint the Park — a sidewalk-square painting event run with the Art Center, Ace Hardware and Danville Office Equipment — will have supply pick-up July 2 and painting on July 3. The city plans a July 3 concert at Millennium Park and a July 4 parade, period rifle competitions at Travelers Rest, and fireworks with food trucks.
Parton said staff had 90 day-camp registrations increase to more than 90 participants and that repairs scheduled for summer include resealing and repainting pickleball lines and fixing concrete cracks on tennis courts. He urged coordinated catering and food-supply plans for block parties after earlier events ran short of food.
Commissioners and staff discussed monitoring content on painted squares and other event logistics; Parton said staff will moderate entries to keep content family‑friendly.
