The Chilton County Commission discussed a drafted letter urging the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) to consider local customer-service problems with Brightspeed before awarding broadband grants, but commissioners voted to table the resolution to allow internal review and outreach.
A commissioner read a draft letter addressed to “Ken Boswell, director, ADECA” asking that ADECA include current customer-service performance in its due diligence. The draft says Brightspeed customers in Chilton County have experienced unacceptable service since Brightspeed’s acquisition of CenturyLink and asserted that tax money should not reward a company that has failed to provide paid-for services.
Commissioner Bone moved to adopt the resolution and Commissioner Billingsley seconded, but Commissioner Childress asked staff to allow internal channels and the mayor—who has a relationship with ADECA’s director—to attempt to resolve the matter first. Commissioner Perkins moved to table the resolution to the next meeting; the motion to table passed unanimously.
No formal resolution was adopted at this meeting. Commissioners said they will revisit the matter after internal follow-up and a review by the mayor’s office.
