Supervisors approve $27,500 community-initiative award for Sunnyside 'Market of Dreams' micro-entrepreneurship center

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a community initiative (CI) funding agreement on May 27 authorizing $27,500 to the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association to support the Market of Dreams micro‑entrepreneurship center and programming in Flagstaff’s Sunnyside area.
Supervisor Hananmo Vasquez moved the item and introduced Dr. Coral Evans, who spoke about the Market of Dreams project’s goal to promote small-business development and resiliency for neighborhoods facing generational poverty. Dr. Evans said the county payment will not cover the entire project; the Market has secured complementary grant funds from United Way of Northern Arizona and a $10,000 award from CareFirst Arizona. County-funded activities cited by the presenter included a paid facilitator and instructors for workshops, translation services, childcare at sessions, licensing and program supplies.
Supervisors praised the renovation of the Market of Dreams facility and the project’s countywide access: presenters said the center will serve Sunnyside but is open to entrepreneurs across the Flagstaff area, with examples cited of a new Grand Canyon-area restaurateur who received mentoring and business-administration support from the Market staff. After public comment and a brief board discussion, the board approved the CI allocation by unanimous voice vote.
The motion authorized county staff to finalize the funding agreement and proceed with disbursement under the county’s CI program. No additional policy changes were made at the meeting.
