Becky Conrad, representing the food bank, said the program serves 1,372 unduplicated veterans annually in the agency’s service area and that local tracking showed roughly 35–40 percent of those veterans are residents of Harrison County. She said the requested county funds would ensure local veterans served at the Bridgeport distribution site would receive two food boxes per month and that the food bank uses a data system (“service insights”) to track participant demographics.
Commissioners asked how the 20 veterans would be identified and whether the food bank could document that recipients live in Harrison County; Conrad said the food bank partners with the VA hospital and veteran service officers to identify local veterans in need and that the service-insights data could provide county-level verification.
After discussion about the county’s annual funding commitments and timing, a commissioner moved to table the request so staff could review financing options and evaluate where the request might fit with the commission’s annual allocations. The motion to table carried. No county funds were approved at the meeting.
