Highland Park expands tree-planting and neighborhood cleanups; environmental commission appointment announced

Council members outlined recent and upcoming environmental programs, including a large tree-planting effort, neighborhood cleanups and the appointment of a new Environmental Commission member.
Council member Matthew Hirsch said the borough recently planted “about a hundred” new trees around town and urged residents to request trees for gaps on their blocks. He also highlighted Sustainable Highland Park events, including the spring 2025 Clean & Green weekend with native plant giveaways, neighborhood cleanups and a Meadows Trail tour scheduled for June 7.
Hirsch announced that Josephine O’Grady was being appointed to the Environmental Commission and congratulated her; the appointment was reported later during the meeting as part of the appointments list. He also thanked volunteers who removed litter and maintained rain gardens and noted that the environmental commission and Sustainable Highland Park have new online resources funded in part by a grant.
Hirsch provided guidance on tree-request procedures and emphasized canopy replacement as older street trees reach the end of their life span.
