Imran Ahmed, a Troy resident, addressed City Council on May 19 to thank school staff, Troy police, emergency medical personnel and hospital staff who responded the night his son collapsed at Troy High School and later died.
Ahmed described the sequence of events: his son attended freshman orientation on May 1, collapsed in the gym and responders initiated CPR and advanced life support. Ahmed said school staff and first responders “gave him CPR...as if he was their own child,” and that the family is trying to channel grief into community benefit. “We started a charity in his name... ‘Be Like Bilal,’” Ahmed said; he reported the fund had raised nearly $35,000 in its first week.
Mayor Baker and multiple council members expressed condolences and thanked Ahmed for coming forward. Council members noted community support and provided the council chamber’s condolences; staff indicated the city would follow up as appropriate.
Ahmed said the family will hold a celebration of life on May 30 and invited community support for the charity effort. The remarks were a public comment; no action item followed from the council.
