The City Council on May 27 unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing Emergency Medical Services during the 50th anniversary of national EMS Week and presented a formal citation to Fall River EMS personnel.
The resolution, introduced by council leadership, thanked EMS employees for their service and formally recognized the organization’s role in public safety. Councilors then presented an official citation and invited EMS personnel to receive it in the chamber.
Several council members used the discussion that followed to highlight operational matters between EMS and the Fire Department. Some councilors asked that the Public Safety Committee convene the chief executives of both EMS and Fire — and union leadership if appropriate — to discuss scope, training, grant coordination and operational responsibilities so that both departments have a shared understanding and avoid countervailing grant or staffing competition. One councilor said the council has historically supported EMS through classification and compensation changes and that today’s recognition is consistent with that support, but he asked for a formal Public Safety briefing to surface and address outstanding operational questions.
Councilors adopted the resolution and citation. The majority also recommended a Public Safety Committee discussion so chiefs from both departments and administration staff can discuss any operational or grant‑related concerns raised during the meeting.
