Sterling Heights council recognizes 2025 scholarship recipients

Sterling Heights City Council at a special meeting on Tuesday recognized recipients of scholarships awarded through the 2025 Sterling Heights Area Community Foundation scholarship program and heard remarks from foundation leaders and sponsors.
The recognition honored students from Sterling Heights and neighboring Macomb County who received awards from corporate and private endowments, including BAE Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems, the Manzuk family, the Mayor Richard J. Noddy scholarship, the Ronald Himmler Science Scholarships, the Selfridge Air National Guard Base Community Council, and the Wooja Kalkatara & Sons endowment. Councilmembers moved and unanimously approved a resolution “to recognize and congratulate the recipients of scholarships awarded through the 2025 Sterling Heights Area Community Foundation Scholarship Program.”
The foundation’s executive director and president emeritus, Carl Scoyan, opened the presentation and described the program’s scope. "Our foundation was established in 1991 to strengthen the quality of life of all Sterling Heights area residents," Scoyan said, and he told the chamber the foundation has presented scholarships “totaling $544,000 now to 558 bright young area students.” Scoyan introduced scholarship sponsors and representatives who announced winners and presented awards.
Jason Kramer, site lead and engineering lead for BAE Systems in Sterling Heights, presented the BAE scholarship to Hao Do of Warren, a Cousino High School senior who plans to study computer science at the University of Michigan. "At BAE Systems, we are proud to support our community and invest in the science and engineering and technology in this area," Kramer said.
The General Dynamics Land Systems scholarship was presented to Parker Johnston, a Sterling Heights resident and Stevenson High School student who will attend Kettering University and pursue an engineering degree. Jeff and Lila Manzuk presented the Manzuk & Son vocational scholarship to Isabella Niam, a Stevenson graduate attending Macomb Community College for veterinary technician training. Michael Noddy presented the Mayor Richard J. Noddy Public Service Scholarship to Sophie Bridal, a Dakota High School graduate headed to the University of Michigan to study political science and public policy.
Ronald Himmler, foundation director and chair of the scholarship committee, described the Ronald Himmler Science Scholarships and awarded three $2,000 scholarships to students headed into science and engineering: Maximus Dexter (mechanical engineering), Serena Elias (biomechanical engineering), and Braden Tickle (aerospace engineering). "To my mind, our society depends on scientists and engineers," Himmler said.
The Selfridge Air National Guard Base Community Council scholarship was awarded to Nathan Farley, an Anchor Bay High School graduate who will attend Michigan State University in the Air Force ROTC program and study data science. The Wooja Kalkatara & Sons scholarship was presented to Timothy Newsome of Clinton Township, a graduating senior at Chippewa Valley High School.
Councilmembers offered congratulatory remarks after the presentations. Councilmember Swierowski moved the resolution to recognize the recipients; the motion was supported, and Mayor Taylor called for the voice vote. "Congratulations to all of you," Councilmember Swierowski said. "It does lighten your load a little bit." Other councilmembers echoed congratulations and wished the students success.
The meeting concluded with an invitation for a group photo of the council, foundation leaders, scholarship sponsors and awardees on the front steps.
