Commissioners reviewed draft ordinances to extend the terms of the law director and finance director and asked staff to finalize the language and accompanying justification memos for the commission’s next meeting so the package can be forwarded to City Council.
Staff said the ordinance draft for law and finance would be ready in time for the commission’s last scheduled meeting on June 2; commissioners agreed they want the drafts and rationale in a Word format before the meeting so members can suggest edits. The commission indicated it would like to vote on those drafts at the June 2 meeting so the items can be attached to the council legislative file and tracked.
Commissioners also discussed process for presenting items to council. One commissioner proposed requesting a committee‑of‑the‑whole special meeting (suggested July 8) devoted to the commission’s proposed charter changes so commissioners can present rationale and hear council members’ responses. Staff confirmed the commission may submit the drafts to council for first reading and that council could schedule readings, public hearings and a special meeting if needed to meet ballot or implementation timelines.
No ordinance was adopted at this meeting. The recorded action was to prepare and circulate draft ordinances and justification memos to commissioners by the end of day Friday ahead of the June 2 meeting.
